Positive Birth Specialist & Doula Services
A Doula is a professional who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother before, during and after giving birth. She 'Mothers the Mother'.
The Doula’s purpose is to help women have a safe, satisfying, and empowering birthing experience.
"I'm here to help women have the best birth experience possible"
"I believe that natural birth can be a joyful, relaxed and transformative experience. I know this because I've experienced it, and so have my clients"
Jennifer Hautman: Doula, Homeopath & Essential Oil Consultant
In 2008 I gave birth to my son at home, in a birth pool, using ujjayi (yogic) breathing and some homeopathic remedies (I didn't yet know about the wonders of Essential Oils, or I would have used them too). I had my husband and mother there, a Doula and my local NHS Homebirth Midwives. The contractions were painless, and only uncomfortable at times. In my case however it took longer to get the placenta out than it did to get my son out, so we gratefully went to hospital to have it manually removed, and to get me stitched up (I tore, and that bit did hurt!).
Since then, in my practice as a Homeopath, I have specialised in helping families to have the best birth possible - whatever that may look like for them. As it happens, most of the women I have worked with have had similar experiences of home births, or spontaneous vaginal births in hospital. In those instances where c-sections or other interventions are required or chosen, these options are welcomed gratefully for the benefits they can bring to mother and baby. My aim is for all women to have the most positive birth experience they can - no matter what the method.
"With a decade of experience, there is so much I can share to help you prepare for any eventuality, and to help make any situation that may arise a more positive one".
Why is the medical intervention rate so high? I believe this is largely due to an 'epidemic of anxiety'.
In the UK, about 2.3% of women have home births, and about 25% of births are through c-sections, with 10% being 'elective', and 15% being 'emergency'. Compare this to the 'gold standard' of birth statistics when midwifery is at it's best:
- 94.7% Home Births
- 5.2% Hospital Transfers
- 1.7% C-Sections,
- 96.8% success rate for VBACs
(vaginal birth after a previous c-section).
My experience of birth (as one of the 2.3% in the UK), and that of many of my clients, is in stark contrast to images of birth in popular culture, which are both a symptom of, and a contributory factor to an epidemic of ‘birth anxiety’. This anxiety however, has the effect of reinforcing and creating more anxiety. This is because fear and anxiety, in any form, releases hormones that can slow or stop a labour from progressing, making it more likely that we may have a traumatic birth experience. If you think about it, it makes sense, from an evolutionary point of view. If we are afraid there are wolves around, then we more likely to suck up our baby until we safe enough to let them out. If we try to force them out when still feeling like there are wolves around, then we are only going to traumatise ourselves with the effort.
What can a Doula do to help make birth a more positive experience?
What I have learned, and will show you, is that there are many simple, safe, practical and natural interventions (including Homeopathy and Essential Oils) that can remove your fears and anxieties, regardless of if these fears are of a physical, emotional or spiritual nature. When given at the right time, an appropriate intervention can allow your birth to progress more easily. In my experience there are many practical, safe and natural interventions that can be used to help women give birth, allowing more invasive methods to be used (with gratitude) only when necessary.
Studies have shown that having a doula as a member of the birth team decreases the overall cesarean rate by 50%, the length of the labour by 25%, the use of (synthetic) oxytocin by 40%, and requests for an epidural by 60%.
Having a doula gives you options, drawn from many years of experience. And these options empower you to make better informed decisions for yourself and your family. So the sooner we can begin to address any fears or anxieties that you may have, and the many options available to overcome them, the better.
But don't just take my word for it. These are statements from some clients:
"I loved, loved, loved using essential oils before, during and after my pregnancy! It was by far the best pregnancy I have had. I used them with my third baby. I used lemon, or any other citrus oil in water, and I never had any swelling. I took 'lifelong vitality' supplements and I felt my hormones were always balanced. I rubbed frankincense and lavender on my abdomen every day to reduce stretch marks... My recovery was so quick I had to remind myself when I got tired that I'd just had a baby. The 'anti-aging' blend made healing a very quick process. I loved having the oils after delivery to continue to help my baby... I knew he was protected because he was in own essential oil bubble."
AC was worried about her second pregnancy & birth because she suffers from a blood disorder that causes her blood to clot, the result of which was her first baby was underweight, and she developed pre-eclampsia, resulting in an emergency c-section. After treatment during her second pregnancy, she wrote to say "Hi Jenny! Just to let you know, I had a doppler scan this morning, and all is OK!!! Baby weight is now 2.8kg which (at 36 weeks) is really good (my daughter was born at 2.6kg)" AC
"During labour I used a 'grounding' essential oil blend. It was so powerful during the birth, because it was that aroma that kept me present. Before I used it, I was having flashbacks of traumatic abuse in my past, but when I smelled it, I could stay in the present moment. Now I use it in my every day life." Gaby
"Jan had an episiotomy with her first baby. When her second one came along, she had a pretty significant tear along the line of her previous episiotomy line. This was her greatest fear with baby number three. She would come to her prenatal appointments with a heavy heart and immeasurable fear. We talked about her past experiences at length, and decided to try Frankinsence and Helichrysum oils every day as a perineum spray to heal and repair those tissues as well as prepare for her next delivery. She agreed and was very committed. She had an incredible birth without a tear! She couldn't have been any happier" Stephanie Fritz, Midwife.
"Hi Jenny, P was born this afternoon! All went as we wished for, quite unbelievable, even if it was longer than expected. Homeopathy was essential in getting the process going again, whenever things were sluggish and also to get my energy going again. He came out waving at us with one hand!" NS, mother of three, after her first home birth.
"Jenny Hautman treated my acne (suffered from it for 17 years), helped me have an easy pregnancy, an un-medicated home-birth (including Billy being in optimal position) & a quick post-labour recovery, treated Billy's silent reflux and helped boost his natural immunity, and these are not all the things my amazing homeopath has helped with". What you can expect from me as your Birth Doula
These are flexible and aimed at preparing you for the approaching birth in a way that suits your outlook and individual needs. I recommend a minimum of three meetings before the birth, but more is ideal. These can be held monthly or weekly, online or in person, at your convenience. I am also available via text, email or phone to provide support from the moment of booking. During the antenatal period we will cover a number of areas, including:
- Your previous experiences and expectations of pregnancy and birth
- Any anxieties or fears you may have for this birth, and strategising solutions
- Discussion of what a ‘good birth’ means to you
- Exploring birth preferences so that you can be as informed as possible when making choices

- Homeopathic treatment and healthcare advice to get you into an optimum state of health
- Essential Oils to help you relax, treat any emotional or physical symptoms you might have, and to help you feel well rested
- Healthcare advice and treatment for the rest of the family, to ensure they are all in the best position to support you and welcome the new addition.
- Your Birth Plan. This is something that we can work on together, and is very helpful to be able to refer to and show to your midwives and other care givers when the time comes.
At the onset of labour, I will come to you whenever you feel I am needed – doula support can be particularly helpful during early labour. Or if you are not local to be, I will advise as much as possible via facetime or telephone. I am happy to perform a variety of practical tasks such as:
- Supporting and encouraging relaxation, breathing and pain relieving techniques
- Hands-on strategies to help you to stay comfortable
- Use of birth pool to help provide pain relief and foetal positioning
- Supporting your partner, allowing for breaks and emotional and practical support if needed
- Support for your children, if needed
- Support for your Midwives as needed

- Protecting a space for your introversion if necessary
- Advocating for you and your informed birth preferences, as indicated in your birth plan
- Helping in the immediate post-partum period to initiate skin-to-skin and establish breast feeding.
I will make at least one further visit, but more are recommended, in which we can de-brief the birth and discuss any issues around healing after the birth as well as breast-feeding, baby-wearing, vaccination, recovery for the mother, emotional support for the whole family, and any other issues that arise.
What you can expect from me as your Post-Natal Doula
It is not necessary for me to have been present at your birth for me to be your post-natal Doula. The role is extremely flexible. If you are based in Central or North London, I could come to you and would be there to support you at times of mutual convenience. If you live further away, I can still support you online via facetime, and over the phone. Services I offer include:
- Emotional and practical support during the recuperation period
- Breast-feeding support
- Homeopathic treatment for healing, feeding or any other issues if required
- Essential Oils for healing, relaxation, baby massage and bonding
- Suggestions for foods and recipes to help with recovery and lactation
- Exploring options for sleeping, baby wearing, and nurturing practices
- Support to help you make an informed choice regarding vaccinations
- Training in how to use a homeopathy kit and essential oils at home for your daily family healthcare needs (kits and reference guides are included)
- In due course, advice and exercises to help close the abdominal muscles and regain your core strength and healthy posture.
My job as a post-natal Doula is to help you heal from the birth experience, and to help you and your family to adjust to life with a new addition. During this time I will offer you as much information and tools as you need to empower you to take care of yourselves and each other, naturally, now and in the future. Please contact me if you would like to know more about my services or to discuss any aspects of childbirth or family health care.

using only the highest quality, purest and most potent plant oils, I will show you how to use these natural wonders to boost your family's health and vitality, as well as to keep your home smelling divine, wonderfully clean and non toxic. As an independent distributor of doTERRA Essential Oils, I am able to include in this package a starter kit (pictured here) of over £800 worth of products including: a selection of Certified Pure, Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, natural hair care and skin care products, supplements, a diffuser, and non toxic cleaning products.
AromaTouch Technique - a clinical application of Essential Oils
A study published in the Journal of Integrative medicine and Therapy, found that participants receiving the AromaTouch Technique experienced decreases in: heart rate, mean arterial pressure, diastolic blood pressure, stress scores, and salivary levels of cortisol. All of which show this Technique to be an excellent way to reduce feelings of stress and promote relaxation, which in turn will boost oxytocin levels, improving outcomes for birth and breastfeeding. Sessions take about an hour and are highly recommended to support relaxation in pregnancy, and when preparing for, and recovering from birth.
Feeding a child does not always come 'naturally'. Sometimes we have to be shown and taught how to do it. For some it comes easily, and for others it can be a very real struggle. In 2018 I completed a Breastfeeding Network peer support helper training course, so that I could better support women in this area to help get breastfeeding established, ensure a good latch, advise on optimal feeding positions for both of your comfort. With the aid of homeopathy, I can also safely treat any difficulties if they arise, such as sore nipples, thrush, mastitis, pain, let down etc.
Post - Natal Abdominal Closure (Mummy Tummy) Exercise Training (as needed)
Whilst studying for a yoga teacher training course when my son was 4, I discovered I had 'diastasis recti', or in other words, my abdominal muscles had split during the pregnancy and as a result, I had a gap of about three finger widths along my 'linea alba'. Since no one else had ever told me anything about it (not the midwives, health visitors, nor any of my many other yoga teachers), I decided to make this topic my area of special interest for the completion of my yoga teacher training, and in the process, with time, I cured my own diastasis. What I learned and the strength and confidence it gave me, I can now pass on to you to help you with your 'mummy tummy'.
Fevers are the foundation of a strong healthy immune system, so you will learn to clearly identify if, when and how to treat fevers, according to both standard medical and naturopathic guidelines.
together we can look at the information and resources you need to be able to make a fully informed decision about what is best for your family when it comes to vaccines, childhood diseases, and travel health.
